In the Beginning (Creation) – Genesis 1-2:3

Do you ever look up at the clouds, or the stars at night, and wonder where they came from?  The Bible tells us that before there was anything, there was God.  God does not have a mother or a father, because he always was there, and he always will be there.  In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.  The earth was empty and without form, and it was dark everywhere.  God moved and said “let there be light” and there was light.  Not the sun or the moon, but light.  Then He separated the light from the darkness, and there was evening and morning, and that was the first day.

The second day God said “Let there be a sky in the middle of the water” and he separated the water above the sky from the water below the sky, and God called the sky Heaven.  And there was evening and morning, and that was the second day.

The third day God said “Let the water under the sky be gathered together in one place, and let the dry land appear” and it was so.  And God called the dry land, Earth, and water he called Seas and God saw that it was good.  And God said “Let the earth bring forth grass, and trees, and fruit.”  The seeds were in the fruit, and God saw that it was good.  And there was evening and morning, and that was the third day.

The fourth day God said “Let there be lights in the sky to separate day from night, for signs, for seasons, for days, and for years, and to give light on the earth.” and it was so.  And God made two lights; the great light to rule the day (and this is the sun) and the lesser light to rule the night (and this is the moon) and he also made the stars.  God put them in the sky to give light on the earth, to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness.  God saw that it was good, and there was evening and morning, the fourth day.

The fifth day God said “Let the waters bring forth many moving creatures that have life, and birds that fly above the earth in the sky.  God created great whales, and every living creature that moves (in the seas) and every winged creature, and God saw that it was very good.  And God blessed them, and the evening and the morning were the fifth day.

On the sixth day, God said “Let the earth bring forth living creatures after their kind, cattle, creeping things, and beasts” and so it was.  Then God said “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness, and let  them (male and female)  have power over the fish in the sea, over the birds in the air, and over the cattle, and over the earth, and over everything that creeps on the earth.  So God created man in his own image, he created male and female, and he blessed them.  God told them that the plants, and the trees were for their food.  He gave the beasts and birds, and creeping things plants to eat.  God saw everything that he had made, and it was very good.  And there was evening and morning and that was the sixth day.

And so the heavens and earth were finished, and everything in them.  On the seventh day God rested from all the work he had made.  And he blessed the seventh day and made it a holy day, because that was the day he rested from all his work.

Memory Verse:  Genesis 1:1 “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
