The Boy Jesus in the Temple – Luke 2
In an earlier story, we learned about how God appeared to Joseph in a dream and told him to take Mary and little Jesus to Egypt and to stay there until they were told by God it was safe to return. (Matthew 2:13-23) After Joseph took Mary and little Jesus back to Nazareth, the child grew and was strong in spirit and filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was upon him.
Now every year his parents went to Jerusalem at the feast of the passover. And when he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem as it was their custom and when they had fulfilled the days, as they returned the child Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem and Joseph and his mother did not know it. They thought that he was in the company of others on the journey, and so they went a day’s journey away before they looked for him among their family and friends. When they were not able to find Jesus, they went back to Jerusalem to look for him. After three days, they found him in the temple, sitting in the middle of the doctors, both listening to them, and asking them questions. And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers.
And when his parents saw him, they were amazed: and his mother said to him, Son, why have you dealt with us like this? your father and I have been filled with sorrow looking for you.
And Jesus said to them, “Why were you looking for me? Did you not know that I must be about my Father’s business?” But they did not understand what he was saying to them.
And so he left and traveled with them, and came to Nazareth and lived under their authority, but his mother kept all these sayings in her heart.
And Jesus increased in wisdom and in size, and in favour with God and man.
