The Sermon on the Mount Part 2 – Matthew 6
Note: no questions or answers for the sermon on the mount, my comments by way of explanation are in italics and bracketed.
This is the continuation of the Lord Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, and he said:
Be careful that you do not give money offerings so men can see you, otherwise you have no reward of your Father (God) which is in heaven. When you give money to the Lord, don’t tell anyone about it like some people do so they can have men think good things about them, those people already have their reward. When you give money to the Lord, do it in secret, so that your heavenly Father (God) who sees the secret things you do, will reward you openly.
When you pray, don’t be as the hypocrites are, they love to pray standing in the churches and in the corners of the streets so they may be seen of men. They have their reward. But you, when you pray, pray to your Father in secret and your Father that sees in secret shall reward you openly. But when you pray, don’t repeat words as those who do not know the Saviour do, because your Father knows what things you have need of before you ask for them. This is how you should pray:
Our Father that is in heaven, hallowed be your name (that is giving glory to God). Let your kingdom come, let your will be done in earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For yours is the kingdom, and the power and the glory, for ever, Amen.
If you forgive men their trespasses, (those that have done wrong things to you) your Father will also forgive you, but if you do not forgive men their trespasses neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. (wrong things you do before God)
Don’t store up treasures on earth, which can be ruined by rust or moths or stolen by thieves, because where your treasure is, your heart will be there also.
No man can serve two masters: you cannot serve God and money. Therefore I say to you, do not give a thought for your life, what you shall eat, or what you shall drink, or what you shall wear. Isn’t your life worth more than food or clothing? Look at the birds of the air: for they do not plant, and they do not harvest, or store away food, but your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much better than them?
And why do you worry about your clothes? Consider the lilies of the field, not even Solomon was clothed as beautiful as they are. So if God so clothes the grass which today is there and tomorrow is not, won’t he clothe you even more? So don’t take any thought saying “What shall we eat? What shall we drink? What shall we wear?” Your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.
Seek first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness, and all these things you need will be given to you. So take no thought for tomorrow, for tomorrow shall take care of itself.
