The Sower and the Seed – Matthew 13
One day, there were people gathered together to listen to Jesus, and he told them a story, called a parable.
“A sower (like a farmer) went out to plant seeds, and as he planted, some fell by the side of the path, and the birds came and ate it. And some fell on stony places where there was not much dirt, and when the sun was up the new plants were burned and because they had no root, they dried up and died. And some fell in the thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it. And other seeds fell on good ground, and grew, and brought forth fruit. Some bore much, some brought forth less.
And when Jesus had said these things, he said “Let those that understand what I am saying, listen to me.” And his disciples asked him why he spoke in stories. And Jesus said to them, “because it is given to you to understand the mysteries of the Kingdom of heaven, but it is not for them to understand.
This is the meaning of the story.
The seed is the Word of God. (which is our Holy Bible) Those by the side of the path are those that hear the Word of God and don’t understand, and pretty soon the devil comes and snatches it away. The ones on the stony places are those which, when they hear, they are very happy, and for while they believe it, but when things become difficult for them, they stop believing, because they did not believe the word of God in their hearts. And those which fell in the thorns are the people who, after they have heard the Word of God, become too interested in the things that are in the world, and in their own problems, and their lives do not show in any way that they are obeying God and trusting Him. But the seed in the good ground are those who hear the word and understand it, and bring forth fruit, that is, the good works which the Lord has prepared for them to do. Their lives show that they are Christians.
