The Death of Moses – Deuteronomy 31
In an earlier story (Food and Water in the Wilderness) we learned how God told Moses to strike the rock and water would flow out. Later on the people were complaining to Moses again, and the LORD spoke to Moses and told him to take the rod, to get Aaron and gather the people, and speak to the rock, and it would bring forth water. And so Moses took the rod, and gathered the people, but instead of speaking to the rock as the LORD had told him to, he struck the rock twice and the water came out. And so the LORD told Moses that because he disobeyed, he would not lead the people into the promised land, and Aaron would not go either. And not long after that Aaron died.
After that Moses spoke to the people and told them these things: Love the LORD your God, walk in his ways, so that the LORD your God shall bless you in the land where you go. But if your heart turns away so that you worship other gods, you will die.” And he told them “I am 120 years old today, and the LORD told me I will not go over this Jordan (river). But the LORD your God, he will go before you, and Joshua, he shall go over before you. Be strong and courageous, do not be afraid, for the LORD your God, he goes with you, he will not fail you or forsake you”
And Moses called Joshua and told him before all Israel “Be strong and of good courage for you must go with this people into the land the LORD has promised to give their fathers. The LORD goes before you, he will be with you, he will not fail you, or forsake you. Do not be afraid.
After that Moses went up from the plains of Moab to the top of Pisgah, and the LORD showed him all the land, as far as the sea. And the LORD said to him “This is the land which I promised to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. I am allowing you to see it, but you shall not go over there.” So Moses, the servant of the LORD, died there according to the word of the LORD. And he buried him, but no man knows where to this day. And from that day on there was not another prophet like Moses, who the LORD knew face to face, in all the signs and wonders which the LORD sent him to do in the land of Egypt.
