Jesus and the Man Born Blind – John 9
One day Jesus was walking with his disciples, and as he passed by he saw a man who had been blind since his birth. And his disciples said “Master, who sinned, this man or his parents because he was born blind?” And Jesus answered them “Neither has this man, nor his parents sinned, but this is so that the works of God will be shown in him. As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”
When Jesus finished speaking he spit on the ground, and made clay of the dirt and the spit, and he put the clay on the eyes of the blind man..and he told him to go and wash in the pool called Siloam, (which means sent). The blind man did as Jesus told him to, and washed and came back seeing. And his neighbours, and everyone who had seen him when he was blind said “Isn’t this the man who sat and begged?” Some said This is him, and some said He is like him, but the man said “I am he”.
They said to him, “How were your eyes opened?” He answered and said “A man whose name is Jesus made clay, and put it on my eyes, and told me to go to the pool of Siloam and wash, and so I did and when I washed, I received sight.” Then they said “Where is he?” and the man answered “I don’t know”. And so they brought the man to the Pharisees, but it was the sabbath day that Jesus made the clay and opened the eyes of the blind man. Now the sabbath day was the day of rest when no work was supposed to be done.
The Pharisees said about Jesus “This man is not of God, because he does not keep the sabbath day.” Others said “How can a man who is a sinner do such miracles? and so some thought one thing and some thought another.
Then they said to the blind man again, “What do you say of him that has opened your eyes?” and the man said “He is a prophet” But the Jews did not believe that he had been blind and had received his sight until they called his parents and they asked them “Is this your son who you say was born blind? How can he see now?” And his parents said “We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind, but we don’t know why or how he can see now, and we don’t know who it was that opened his eyes. He is old enough and can speak for himself, so ask him.” His parents said these things because they were afraid of the Jews, because the Jews had said that if anyone confessed that Jesus was the Christ, they would be put out of the synagogue.
And so the Pharisees called the man again and said “Give God the praise, we know that this man (Jesus) is a sinner. And the man answered and said “Whether or not he is a sinner I don’t know, but one thing I do know, I was blind, and now I see.” Then they said to him again “What did he do to you, how did he open your eyes? And the man answered them “I have told you already and you did not hear me, so why do you want to hear it again? Would you be his disciple?” And the Pharisees were very angry at him, and said “You are his disciple, but we are Moses’ disciples. We know that God spoke to Moses, as for this man (Jesus) we don’t know who he is.”
The blind man who could now see said “Why here is a marvelous thing, that you don’t know who he is, and yet he has opened my eyes. Now we know that God does not hear sinners, but if any man is a worshipper of God, and does his will, him God hears. Since the world began did anyone ever hear that a man opened the eyes of a man who was born blind? If this man were not of God, he could do nothing.” And the Pharisees answered him “You were born in sin, and you teach us?” and they put him out.
Now Jesus heard that they had put him out, and when he found him, he said to him “Do you believe on the Son of God?” and the man answered him and said “Who is he Lord, that I might believe on him?” And Jesus said to him, “You have seen him, and it is he that talks with you.” And the man said “Lord I believe” and he worshipped Jesus.
And Jesus said “I have come into the world to judge it, that they who do not see, might see, and they which see might be made blind.” And some of the Pharisees which were with him heard these words, and said to Jesus “Are we blind also?” And Jesus said to them “If you were blind, you would have no sin, but now you say We see, therefore your sin remains.”
Praise the Lord for this wonderful story. May our eyes be also opened to the truth, that Jesus Christ is Lord. that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.
Memory Verse: John 9:38 “And he said, Lord I believe. And he worshipped him.”
