The Risen Lord Jesus on the Road to Emmaus – Luke 24

The Risen Lord Jesus on the Road to Emmaus – Luke 24

On the day that the Lord Jesus rose from the tomb, two of his disciples were walking along a road to a village called Emmaus.  As they walked, they talked about all the things that had happened (concerning Jesus).  As they talked and thought about these things, Jesus came up to them and walked with them.

But their eyes were held so that they did not know that it was Jesus.  One of them, named Cleopas, said to Jesus ‘Are you a stranger that you do not know the things that have happened?” and Jesus said “What things?”  They said “Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, who was a mighty prophet in word and deed before God and all the people, and how the chief priests and rulers brought him to be condemned to death, and have crucified him. But we trusted that it was he that should have redeemed Israel, and besides all this today is the third day since these things were done.  Certain women that were also disciples went to his tomb early, and when they did not find his body they came and said that they had seen a vision of angels which said that he was alive.  Some of the disciples went to the tomb and found it as the women had said, but they did not see Him.”

Then Jesus said to them “O fools who are slow to believe all that the prophets have spoken. Shouldn’t Christ have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory?” And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he explained to them about all the scriptures concerning himself. And when they came to the village, Jesus made as though he would go further, but they asked Jesus to stay with them because the day was almost gone.

As Jesus sat having a meal with them, he took bread and blessed it and broke it, and gave it to them. Their eyes (of understanding) were opened, and they knew him, and he disappeared from their sight.

They said “didn’t our heart burn within us while he talked with us as we walked, and as he opened to us the scriptures? And they got up right away and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven gathered together.  They told the apostles what things happened to them on the way to Emmaus, and how they broke bread.

Memory Verse: Luke 24:30-31 “…he took bread, and blessed it, and broke and gave to them. And their eyes were opened, and they knew him….”
