Elijah and the Still Small Voice – 1 Kings 19
In the previous story we learned how Elijah told Ahab that rain was coming after a long time without rain on the earth. We learned how when the rain came, Elijah ran faster than Ahab’s chariot back to the city of Jezreel.
Ahab told his wife Jezebel everything that Elijah had done, and then Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah saying that she would have Elijah killed by the same time the next day. When Elijah heard that, he ran for his life to a place called Beer-sheba which was a safe place, and he left his servant there. But Elijah went a day’s journey into the wilderness, and sat down under a Juniper tree. He asked the LORD if he could die, saying “it is enough, O LORD take away my life.” But as he lay and slept under the tree, an angel touched him and said to him “arise and eat.” Elijah looked and there was a cake baking on the coals of a fire, and a bottle of water at his head. And Elijah ate and drank, and lay down again. Isn’t that a wonderful thing that the angel of the LORD came to Elijah?
The angel of the LORD came again and touched Elijah and told him “get up and eat because the journey is too great for you.” so Elijah arose, ate and drank, and in the strength of that meal went 40 days and 40 nights to Horeb, the mountain of God. There he went into a cave and stayed there, and the word of the LORD came to him saying “what are you doing here, Elijah?” Elijah answered “I have been very strong for the LORD God for the children of Israel have forsaken your covenant, thrown down the altars to you, and killed your prophets. Only I am left, and they want to kill me too.
The LORD told Elijah to go and stand on the mountain before the LORD. And the LORD passed by and a great and strong wind shook the mountain and broke the rocks in pieces, but the LORD was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake was a fire, but he LORD was not in the fire, and after the fire a still small voice. When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his clothing and stood a the entrance to the cave. Once more the voice said “what are you doing here Elijah?” and once more Elijah told of all that had happened.
The LORD told Elijah to go to Damascus and anoint Hazael to be king over Syria, and to anoint Jehu to be king over Israel, and anoint Elisha to be the prophet in Elijah’s place. The LORD also told Elijah that he was not alone, that there were 7,000 who had not bowed to the false god Baal.
So Elijah departed to do all the things the LORD had told him to do.
