The Book of Job

The Book of Job

There was a man in the land of Uz named Job, who feared God, and was upright in his ways. Job had seven sons and three daughters and much property. And it was the habit of Job to pray and offer sacrifices to God for the sins of his children.

Now one day the angels came before the LORD, and Satan (the devil) came also.  Satan told the LORD that Job feared God for nothing, because God had put protection around Job, but if that protection was taken away, Job would curse God. So God told Satan that he could do anything he wanted to all that Job had, but he wasn’t allowed to do anything to Job.

In a single day, all Job’s children, all his animals, and all his servants were killed.  When Job found out about it he tore his clothes, shaved his head, and fell down and worshipped the LORD and said “..the LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away, blessed be the name of the LORD.” In all the bad things that had happened, Job did not sin.

After that Satan came to the LORD and told the LORD that if Job were hurt in his body, he would curse God. So God allowed Satan to hurt Job, but he was not allowed to take his life. Job was soon covered with painful boils, and he took a piece of a pot to scrape his sores and sat down in the ashes. His wife told him to curse God and die, but Job told her she was foolish and he still did not sin.

When Job’s three friends, Eliphaz, Bildad, and Zophar, heard what happened to him they came to comfort him and they stayed with him for a week, and no one said a word because they could see that Job was very sad.

Now at the end of that time, Job became very depressed and said that he was sorry for being born because the thing he feared most had come upon him. Then his three friends began to try to talk to him about why they thought all these things happened.  They talked back and forth between themselves for a long time, and finally they stopped talking to Job because he was righteous in his own eyes. Then a man named Elihu came to talk with Job, and spoke to Job about the wonderful works of God, and he told Job that “…the Almighty…does not respect any that are wise of heart, (that means wise in their own eyes), and finally the LORD spoke to Job.

The LORD said “Who is this that gives advice without knowledge, where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? answer if you have understanding.” And the Lord began to speak to Job of all the things he created, the heavens, the earth and all that is on the earth. And finally Job answered the LORD and said “I know that you can do everything, and that no thought can be withheld from you. Therefore I have spoken things that I did not understand. But now I have heard you and now I understand.  I repent in dust and ashes.”   I know that my redeemer lives.

And so the LORD turned around all the things that happened to Job and he gave him twice as much as he had before. Than all his relatives came to see him and ate with him. So the LORD blessed the end days of Job more than his beginning. Job also had seven sons and three daughters. In all the land there were no women so pretty as the daughters of Job.

And after all this, Job lived 140 years and saw his sons and his sons’ sons, four generations did Job see. And when he died, he was very old.

Memory Verse: Job 1:21 “…the LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD.”

Job 19:25:  “For I know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth”
