The Brass (Bronze) Serpent
In an earlier story, (the Death of Moses) we learned that Aaron died and after Aaron died, but when Moses was still alive, Arad, the Canaanite king, heard that the people of Israel were coming his way, and he fought against them and took some of them prisoners. And Israel made a vow to the LORD and said “If you will deliver this people into my hand, then I will destroy their cities completely”.. And the LORD granted the desire of Israel, and delivered the Canaanites up, and they and their cities were destroyed by (the people of) Israel. And the name of the place was called “Hormah”.
Now after that, they traveled from mount Hor by way of the Red sea, and came to the land of Edom. The people became very discouraged because the way was so difficult. Then the people spoke against God and against Moses saying “Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? for there is no bread, nor is there any water, and we hate this light bread (manna which the LORD provided them)
So the LORD sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people, and many of the people died. So the people came to Moses and said “We have sinned, for we have spoken against the LORD, and against you. Pray to the LORD so he will take away the serpents from us. And Moses prayed for the people.
And the LORD said to Moses, “You make a fiery serpent, and put it upon a pole, and it shall be done that every one that is bitten, when he looks upon it, he shall live.” So Moses made a serpent of brass, and put it upon a pole, and it came to pass that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he looked upon the serpent of brass, he lived.
So the children of Israel went forward, and pitched their tents in Oboth.
Memory Verse: Numbers 21:8 “And the LORD said unto Moses, Make thee a fiery serpent, and set it upon a pole: and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, when he looketh upon it, shall live.” (KJV)
